The Rōnin Way

Origin and ethos

From a rogue experiment in a Chamonix living room to a steadfast rejection of disposable ski culture, our journey has always been defined by independence. To be Rōnin is to carve your own path—not just on the mountain, but in how we craft the tools that take you there. Below is the story of our humble beginnings and the uncompromising ideals that drive our design today.

our story

Under feudal law during the Edo period, samurais who lost their master could not seek new employment, and thus became wandering, masterless warriors. Answering to none but themselves and forever becoming Rōnin. The desire to explore the mountains and choose one’s path come hell or high water is the spirit that embodies Rōnin. An integral part of Rōnin’s ski design and creative philosophy to this day connects a community of skiers who feel the same.

The first pair of skis I built were pressed in a plastic bag, connected to a vacuum pump I had torn out of the back of a refrigerator at the local dump and clamped to my living room table in Chamonix. Our methods have evolved since then, but the diehard excitement and desire to build amazing skis is still the same.

At the time of Rōnin’s conception, the ski industry offered little in the way of inspiring ski design. So with a blank canvas and a few friends, I started the process of building and testing skis without restrictions.

A local mountain guide spotted my girlfriend of the time skiing on a pair of Rōnin skis and inquired about them. A few months later I was delivering an order to my first customer: ten pairs for a private heli ski lodge.

The amazing feedback of that first order, as well as encouragement from friends and family who loved their skis, led to the founding of Rōnin. Our skis are built by hand in the Chamonix valley with infinite care and attention to detail, beneath the mountains that inspire us as well as provide a unique testing ground for our products.

Philosophy and Ideals

Rōnin skis are designed with all-mountain performance as a highest priority. Fluid and graceful downhill movement will always be the number one driving force behind all Rōnin skis. Our ski design process is continuously evolving, in order to perfect skis that you can take anywhere on the mountain with confidence, and without hesitation.

We create our limited edition skis from the highest quality and hardest wearing materials available. We use sustainable options that never compromise performance. We want a product that challenges the industry norm of disposable skis that barely last a season. This is a conscious, environmentally-sensitive choice.

Skis made with performance-enhancing materials and minimal environmental impact is what we at Rōnin strive for. The very mountains that inspire us and that serve as our testing grounds are exactly what we also want to protect. Higher quality, longer lasting skis mean less waste over the course of a skier’s life and fewer pairs ending up in landfills. Building skis is a dirty business, and skiing yours for longer is the easiest way to lower your personal footprint.

In a world of hype around the “next best thing”, the Rōnin community connects around the most honest ski products available. Each year at Rōnin, we build a small batch of fifty beautiful, no-bull, freeride skis.

If our vision resonates with you, and we can help facilitate your mountain experience, we would love to welcome you to the community of Rōnin skiers.
